Written for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, this book provides a unified methodology for problem-solving in structural geology using linear algebra and computation. Assuming only limited mathematical training, the book begins with classic orientation problems and progresses to more fundamental topics of stress, strain, and error propagation. Topics include transformations of coordinate axes and vectors, matrix operations and indicial notation, and progressive strain histories and kinematics.
MATLAB is introduced and used to solve numerous examples in the book. In addition, a supplemental set of MATLAB code files is available for download.
