A Decade of Efficiency Gains: Leveraging Modern Development Methods and the Rising Computational Performance-Price Ratio
Dr. Simon Round, ABB
Efficiency is a driver for any business, for both the end products and business processes. As a power and automation company, ABB has a key focus on energy efficiency as its products convert electrical energy to drive trains, generate solar power, protect critical plants from voltage dips, and charge electric vehicles. Since 2004 the Power Conversion Business Unit has leveraged a custom power electronics controller to enable faster product development and access into new markets. The enabler has not only been faster and cheaper computing electronics, but also new methods of developing and verifying applications. In particular, the introduction of Model-Based Design and automatic code generation technology at an early stage provided major benefits.
This presentation looks at ABB's 10 years of experience from using Model-Based Design, the electronics needed, the gains achieved, the difficulties faced, and the change in the organisation needed to ensure long-lasting productivity gains. Examples based on train propulsion converters are used throughout. Future technologies that are making this easier, and becoming in reach for all, are also presented.
