On-Target Rapid Prototype Simulation with MATLAB

As part of efficient development, the simulation and verification of possible solutions in advance has become indispensable. For this reason, particularly in control systems development, MATLAB® and Simulink® have made inroads as development software. A lot of time and effort is saved if the control algorithms can be tested in the simulator, thus enabling the possible effects of changed parameters to be quickly and easily forecast.
After the optimal control system has been designed and simulated with MATLAB and Simulink, we need to think about how this system can be integrated in the actual control hardware. Target-specific rapid prototyping of control system applications is made easy with Embedded Coder® and Fixed-Point Toolbox™. When a specific target processor is not floating point, we use Fixed-Point Toolbox to tune our algorithm to the bit limits required by the target processor. Embedded Coder helps us to generate the target-specific code and connect to the real-time processor to perform the simulations.
With this process, we can quickly see our control systems behavior in the real-time processor. Any optimization and correction of the system is possible inside MATLAB while simulating the code in the real-time processor.
In this presentation, we discuss the benefits of processor-in-the-loop simulation with MATLAB, Embedded Coder, and Fixed-Point Toolbox as a step of our validation procedure.
